Silver maple while native to eastern North America, is an adaptable tree capable of growing in many locations and in poorer soil. It is also a fast growing tree capable of up to 3 feet annually with a ten year old tree averaging above 20 feet in height. Other characteristics of the tree include good shade coverage with varying hues of mostly yellows, oranges and some light reds in the fall foliage. Silver maples also have a decent degree of wind resistance due to their woods being highly flexible and can be seen growing on the open plains of the midwest where water is in decent supply. However, due to their fast growth younger shoots can be weaker than more mature limbs and may be subject to high winds.

Note: Silver maples are closely related to red maples and will hybridize in their seed production.
